Soldadera
2002
The Soldadera series is the first set of self-portraits I created. Made in 2002 during a time when my identity and interest in culture was developing, these photographs represent my initial exploration into self-portraiture. Based on stories of Soldaderas, the women who fought alongside and cared for the Soldados of the Mexican Revolution, these images mimic an aesthetic of historical photographs of women in war.
