I feel like my inner self is the site of a battle between empathy and indifference. The red muscle on my face is half of a heart. This heart that seems to be taking over and spreading represents empathy, an overwhelming, sometimes questionable, dilapidating sense of empathy. This empathy I sometimes confuse with guilt and vice versa. It's an empathy so strong that I feel it sometimes pushes me towards an other side; a much darker side. I know in my heart that being indifferent to the world and the people in it is no way to live; and so the internal battle continues.
The concept for this image developed from the black radishes I have hanging from my ears. I was instantly drawn to them when I saw them in my local fruit market. The color is striking and they feel nice and heavy in your hand. I had never seen a black radish before so I did a little research and I came across a blog titled Ode To A Difficult Food: Black Radishes. In reading through the blog I thought maybe I was a black radish in my previous life. The writer describes the vegetable as "
